A 1959 Topps Football One-Cent Wax Box Proof Sheet

Hey, hey, like the 1963 Topps Monster Flip Movies Five-Cent Display Box Uncut Sheet, here’s another item that has a place in both The Uncut Sheet and Unopened Archives: a 1959 Topps Football One-Cent Wax Box Proof Sheet.

1959 Topps Football

Mastro offered it in their December 2007 Sports & Americana auction catalog. Here’s how they described it:

The printed design for the 1959 Topps Football 120-Count, 1ยข wax pack display box is fully revealed on this likely one-of-a-kind production relix. The uncut and unfolded peice, printed on semi-glossy paper, measures approximately 14-1/2” x 20”, and has been matted and framed to 18” x 23” overall dimensions. Apparent Excellent to Mint condition, with a couple of proofing marks and touches of residual adhesive.

It’s also such a rare box that I’ve only seen a handful of surviving copies, which makes this one so cool. You can actually see the black and red outlined football players under the lid fold and the legs of the football player!

Details you obviously can’t see in this GAI-graded example that Memory Lane Inc. sold for $442.98 in September 2007.

Heritage sold the same display box (the staining along the top looks the same), before it was slabbed, in July 2004, for $980.95, but it also came with a pair of 1-cent wrappers.

I have a photo of another box, but unfortunately, I can’t remember the source. It may be the same one I shared from The Ultimate 1959 Topps Football Display Box And Wrapper Collection.
