One of the big stories coming out of the 2026 National Sports Collectors Convention was the man and young boy who were video taped stealing a $15,000 Patrick Mahomes card from The Hobby Box UK.
The card was a 2025 Topps Chrome Patrick Mahomes #148 Gold Refractor Variation, graded PSA 10 and serial-numbered 20/50 (PSA cert. #171762727). The card was recovered by authorities and arrangements were made to return it to the rightful owner.
The story immediately reminded me of a another dark chapter from National history, when as much as $600,000 worth of baseball cards were reportedly stolen during the 12th National Sports Collectors Convention in Anaheim, California, in July 1991.
And it wasn’t just one theft.
According to newspaper reports, three separate incidents occurred during the show.

More than 35 years later, security remains one of the unfortunate realities of setting up at a major card show. The cards, the prices, and the technology may have changed dramatically, but apparently some things in the hobby haven’t changed nearly enough.
