David Bier Photos Matched To 1957 And 1958 Parkhurst Hockey Cards

Classic Auctions sold a lot of 17 David Bier photos of the late-’50s Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens, nine of which were used for 1957–58 or 1958–59 Parkhurst hockey cards, for $198. The “used for” side of vintage sports photography, original images that made their way onto trading cards, is an area I’ve been getting more interested in and may turn into a dedicated archive. For now, I’ve only documented a few 1952 Topps baseball examples as a hobby resource, so I figured I’d match these Bier photos to their corresponding Parkhurst cards here on the blog.

1958 Parkhurst #47 Phil Goyette

Notice that Parkhurst reused the same photo for Goyette in ’58 that they used in ’57, but recolored it a bit.

Here’s the complete item description and all the photos that Classic Auctions provided:

Extremely historic images from one of the most renowned photographers in NHL history, these 5″ x 7″ photos by David Bier features not only members of the Montreal Canadiens late-1950s Stanley Cup dynasty – the all-time greatest, 9 images were also used for either the 1957-58 or 1958-59 Parkhurst hockey cards!

At approx 5″ x 7″, each photo was taken by David Bier, with his imprint over the bottom left. There is also a Bier stamp on each reverse, with the respective player’s name also either handwritten or stamped. The set includes Plante, Hodge, Bonin, Geoffrion, Goyette, Harvey (2 different), McDonald (2 different), Provost (2 different), Pronovost (2 different), Talbot, Turner, Carter and coach Blake. The Plante, Harvey, Bonin, Goyette and Provost are the same images used for the 1957-58 Parkhurst set, while Hodge, Geoffrion, Goyette, McDonald and Pronovost were used for the 1958-59 Parkhurst set. There is also a rare image of Bill Carter, who played just one game for the Habs in 1957-58, and 7 games in 1961-62. The photos are all “rolled/curled”, with each having two small holes at the top as they were previously mounted along with the odd crease. Seven photos also have some water staining on the upper reverse including Geoffrion and one of the Harvey photos, with one of the Provost photos having a bit of paper residue on the upper front.
