Blood, Guts & Bubblegum Cards

Originally published in the August 1984 issue of Baseball Cards MagazineBlood, Guts & Bubblegum Cards is a phenomenal article by Jim Nicewander, one of the hobby’s most gifted writers. It dives into the career of legendary artist Norm Saunders, whose vivid, dramatic work defined some of Topps’ most unforgettable non-sports sets: Civil War NewsMars Attacks, and Battle. Nicewander’s piece captured the a creative force who shaped card collecting far beyond the ballpark.

…just about every non-sports set which featured hand-painted artwork rather than photos, and was issued by Topps between 1962 and 1980 was done at least partly, if not entirely, by the hand of Norm Saunders.
