Here’s a pretty cool display I spotted in Mastro’s June 2007 Classic Collector auction catalog: a 1952 Topps Baseball five-cent wax wrapper, a stick of gum and five cards, all framed together.

I have to think someone opened this pack and decided to preserve the whole thing. The nickel packs contained five cards, and that’s exactly what we have here.
The cards are #11 Phil Rizzuto, #25 Johnny Groth, #27 Sam Jethroe, #63 Howie Pollet and #69 Johnny Stallcup. All five are from the first 80 cards in the set, so assuming they really did come from the same pack, this looks like a preserved first-series pack opening.
And since those first 80 cards were issued with both red and black backs, there’s one thing the display doesn’t tell us: which backs are they?
If anyone knows where this display ended up, or has done something similar, please let me know.
Happy Collecting!
