Here’s another awesome piece of Goudey history from Mastro’s December 2002 auction catalog: an uncut sheet of 13 covers from the 1937–38 R326 Goudey Big League Baseball Movies set, signed by Joe DiMaggio and Bob Feller.
I’ve written about the R326 Goudey Flip Movies set previously, but here’s a quick refresher. The issue consists of 26 miniature flip books featuring 13 players, each appearing in two parts (this sheet has all the part 2s). Flipping through the pages creates the illusion of the player in motion. You can occasionally find individual examples of these unusual flip books for sale on eBay.
Mastro’s sheet features 13 covers, including seven Hall of Famers: Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Mel Ott, Paul Waner, Joe Medwick, Luke Appling, and Bob Feller. DiMaggio and Feller also signed the sheet beneath their respective names.
The 12” x 21” sheet was described as EX, with a fold across the center, and was framed and matted to 16” x 26”. Mastro assigned it a $200 minimum bid.
While complete sets and individual booklets occasionally appear at auction, I haven’t been able to track down another uncut sheet from this issue. If anyone knows of another example, I’d love to see it.
