Here’s a fun article from the June 1993 issue of Sports Card Trader: “Undervalued Subsets,” by Benjamin Rudolph.
Rudolph highlighted ten subsets he thought collectors were overlooking, including 1976 Topps All-Time Greats, 1982 Donruss Diamond Kings, 1961 Topps Highlights, and 1975 Topps MVP cards.
The article was written very much with the investment-minded hobby of the era in mind, but I think the basic idea holds up, just in a different way.
I don’t think cards are “investments”, but if you want your collecting budget to go a long way, subsets can still be a great place to look. They’re often loaded with Hall of Famers, great designs, and interesting themes, without the prices attached to those players’ more popular cards.
Here’s what collectors were being encouraged to chase in 1993.

Happy collecting!
