The Notoriously Tough 1966 Topps #132 Football Checklist

To celebrate the upcoming NFL season, and in honor of seeing a collector share the following image of an incredibly rare high-grade 1966 Topps football #132 Checklist from The National 2021, I thought I’d do a deeper dive into this notoriously condition sensitive football card.

The checklist is the most challenging card to find in high-grade condition in the 132-card 1966 Topps football set. It’s notoriously off-center top-bottom like the following example.

Plus, kids used checklists to keep track of the cards they had in the vintage era, so they will often be marked and have a lot of general corner wear from use. The PSA population report validates that. Of the 146 graded examples, 80 have qualifiers. Overall, there are zero PSA 10s, zero 9s, one 8.5, and three 8s. And the first eight didn’t pop until around 2016.

PSA’s SMR doesn’t even list a price for an 8 or 9 since they are so rare, but they list $225 for a PSA 7. With such low pop counts, there aren’t too many sales. But on August 1, 2021, the PSA 8 shown below sold for just under $5000 on eBay.

Recent sales for PSA 6s without qualifiers are $292 on August 1, 2021, $170 in July 2021, $307 in March 2021, and $204 in March 2020.

While the high-grade examples command high dollars, the raw off-center cards usually sell for around $30 (like the example below), so this is just a case of scarcity in a high-grade sort of card.

I think checklists are such an interesting vintage hobby niche. While the cards aren’t always rare, high-grade examples tend to be very uncommon, and that’s definitely true of the 1966 Topps Football #132 checklist. Raw examples are quite accessible, but high-grade checklists are 4-figure cards.
