One-Card Wonders: The First – and Last – Hockey Cards

One of the quiet joys of digging through old hobby publications is finding research that still holds up decades later.

In the September 1993 issue of Sports Collectors Digest’s Sports Card Price Guide Monthly, Randy Steinman published a terrific reference article titled “One-Card Wonders: The First – and Last – Hockey Cards.” The piece spotlights NHL players whose rookie card was also their only appearance in a major hockey card set; true “one-card wonders.”

It’s the kind of checklist-driven deep dive that makes you look at certain commons and short-lived careers a little differently. This article is also a great reminder of how much great research was being done long before online databases.
