A buddy and I often email back and forth about obscure pieces from the hobby’s early days, especially those found in old hobby publications. One fascinating item he pointed out recently appeared in a September 2004 Vintage Non-Sports Card auction. It’s something I hadn’t seen before: a 1937 article by Lionel Carter on baseball card collecting, published in the Kaw Chief Stamp Journal.

The listing described it as follows:
This extremely rare copy of the 1937 Kaw Chief Stamp Journal features an article by Lionel Carter on baseball card collecting. This is a very early start to the hobby from one of the modern pioneers of card collecting. Great piece in VG to VGEX condition.
It ultimately sold for $89.25. The find was later discussed on the Net54baseball Forums, where the owner noted:
Anything about our hobby from the 1930s is exceedingly rare.
I’m committed to documenting hobby history here on the blog, so I wanted to make sure this article was preserved and shared. And of course, if you have a copy for sale, I’m a buyer.
Happy collecting!
P.S. If you have any other historic hobby documents, please reach out; I’d love to feature them here on the blog.
P.P.S Here’s are pair of scans of the 1937 Kaw Chief Stamp Journal.
