The original artwork for Jim Coates’ 1959 Topps card (#525) reveals a broader painting than what ultimately made it onto the card. Like many cards from that year, the design’s thick graphic elements constrained how much of the painting collectors could see. Still, it’s a far more engaging approach than the floating head designs Topps leaned into in later years.

While Coates didn’t have a long career, he had memorable moments: two All-Star selections, two World Series championships with the Yankees, and 43 career wins. His card and the art behind it reflect an era when even mid-tier players were given serious artistic attention.

Happy collecting!
