A few hours after I published Six More Unused Bowman Original Artworks (Plus the Phil Marchildon Mystery), I got a new item for The Hobby Library in the mail that delivered another bit to their history.
Inside was the June 1989 issue of The Trader Speaks (Vol. 18, No. 1), and as I flipped through it, there it was: Bob Lemke’s article, Who Are These Guys? The Bowmans That Never Were. The timing couldn’t have been much better.
After a quick e-mail with Keith, he noticed that the Phil Marchildon artwork pictured in the article isn’t autographed.
That means the signature was added sometime after Lemke saw the card in June 1988 at the Washington Sports Collectors Assicaiton show but before Marchildon’s death in January 1997. Compared to other examples of his autograph, it certainly appears to be authentic.
One of my favorite parts of building The Hobby Library is moments like this. A research project leads to another source, which leads to more history. The research never really ends.
