The Bazooka Bubble Gum Blowing Championship Ruler

Back in February, I wrote a piece called Joe Garagiola’s 1973 Topps Business Card: From Bubble Gum Blowouts to Baseball Card Lore and how his role at NBC led to one of the most entertaining baseball cards ever made, the 1976 Topps Kurt Bevacqua bubble-blowing card. In that photo, you can see a Bazooka-branded measurement device, a sort of ruler, to gauge his bubble’s size.

I’d never actually seen one of those rulers in the wild until I stumbled across a June 2005 Lelands auction that offered one alongside a 1960s Topps promotional Mickey Mantle poster.

The lot didn’t meet its reserve, but the ruler was described as being in VG-EX condition. I’m not sure what standards apply to grading bubble-measuring tools, but it’s certainly a fun piece of hobby ephemera tied to one of Topps’ most memorable promotions.

Happy collecting!
