1989 Topps Hills Team MVP’s Overview

Topps created this high-gloss, boxed set for the Hills department store chain. The year before, the “Team MVP’s” set was issued by Rite Aid, but Topps flipped affiliations for the only time in the boxed-set era. The collection featured Topps’ guess of each team’s best players.

24 33-card sets came in each box, with each set selling at “Hills everyday low price” of $1.97.

The fronts of the cards feature a photo of the player with Hills Team MVPs printed along the top and the player’s team, name, and position along the bottom. Topps also printed its logo on the player photo.

The backs are horizontal with a green background with standard sports card information. The cards are ordered alphabetically by the player’s name.

Surprisingly, to me, PSA has actually graded 239 of these cards, 147 of which are 10s, which makes sense from a boxed set. However, most of the interesting sales are Beckett authaneticated autographed copies, including a Roger Clemens that sold for $50 in June 2022, a George Brett that sold for $35 in October 2017, and a Harold Baines that sold for $22 in July 2023. The cards also seem to have been commonly used for Topps Archives Signature Series autographs.
