1969 High’s Dairy Washington Redskins Overview

I was motivated to showcase this set here on The Oddball Archive after running across the following synopsis of it from the January 15, 1970 (Vol. 2, No. 3) issue of The Trader Speaks, which has to be the first summary of the set in the hobby.

High’s Dairy Portraits – The Trader Speaks

Mel Bailey’s summary seems to be the source of Beckett’s set synopsis:

This eight-card set was sponsored by High’s Dairy Stores and measures approximately 8″ by 10″. The front has white borders and a full color painting of the player by Alex Fournier, with the player’s signature near the bottom of the portrait. The plain white back gives biographical and statistical information on the player on its left side, and information about Fournier on the right. Reportedly 70,000 of each photo was produced. Collectors could receive a free card for each two half gallons of milk they purchased or could buy them from High’s Dairy Stores for ten cents each. The cards are unnumbered and checklisted below in alphabetical order. Reportedly, Bobby Mitchell was drawn for this set but never printed

The Redskin’s Football Card Museum notes that, ‘High’s Dairy used to compete with 7-11 in the VA/MD/DC area.  However, 7-11 won though there are a few High’s Dairy stores scattered about Maryland and Delaware.”

Given the set’s physical dimensions, it’s not surprising that PSA hasn’t graded any.

1969 High’s Dairy Washington Redskins Significant Sales

These cards are relatively inexpensive, $5-10 a piece, so there aren’t really any significant sales to report. Now, if the original artworks came to market, those would be worthy of highlighting.

The cards were printed in equal quantities, but Sonny Jurgensen would likely be considered the premium piece.
